I want a Pokemon game that feels like I"m in a real world situation where I can go wherever I want whenever I want to, and I want Pokemon that behave like real creatures rather than just spawning in and wandering back and forth until you run into them. It could be open world, maybe has some areas where real-time battling is a thing and other areas where the standard turn-based battling is present. You spend a LOT more time in the overworld and leveling isn't as linear. I personally think it would work is there was some sort of major level design overhaul turn all the regions into a more realistic overworld that doesn't have barriers between and change the gym/league to just be more difficult, competitive level teams. It’s ultimately up to game freak to make the games with their vision. And while the pokemon company, game freak, and Nintendo run their aspects separately. Again I hate micro transactions but let’s be honest pokemon is already sliding down this path and Nintendo has done little to stop it. Give players what they want and boost the competitive community by making the games make players focus on that if they so choose. I hate micro transactions but if they’re like the hg/ss celebi event then they are worth it. This would also allow the legendaries to have fleshed out stories that if done right could be fun $5 dlcs. You could even have them iv/ev trained for in game competition. Once the elite four have been dealt with you then add either a trainer tree or frontier like area that is the culmination of your best team, against the best trainers and their best team.
Take these same principles and to fix leveling issues is to reset your team by making you choose a new starter and until you clear the elite four cannot bring over old pokemon. Pokemon also has now implemented DLC to add essentially a new half of a region. Pokémon currently has a toe dipped into the mmo world with raids. If they did it right-ish, they could turn it into a win win.
